Well, I'm having to delete a big branch of my tree on my maternal side. The only connection to anyone famous that I noticed is somewhat distantly related to Robert E. Lee. This branch consisted mostly of Virginia planters who doubtless owned lots and lots of slaves. I'm replacing them with rather poor French Huguenots with a couple of preachers in there somewhere. I haven't really gone into that Huguenot branch yet. But the connecting female is Margaret Reno. I wonder if now I'm related to the late Janet Reno. She is certainly famous. Reno is anglicized from Renaud or Reynaud, etc.

Janet Reno's dad was an immigrant from Denmark who changed his name from Rasmussen to Reno.

Yeah, I see that now on Wekipedia (Google). Then there are two different origins for Reno. My Huguenot line holds up at Ancestry.

I am probably related to Maj.Gen. Jesse Lee Reno. Reno, Nevada was named after him. His paternal line is Huguenot, as you can see by Googling him. I'm not exactly sure of the connection. But my line going back there is via Cynthia Anna Lee, 1816-1856, who is my direct maternal ancestor. She would be U5b2b2/G228A.

later: OK, I see how I am related to Maj-Gen Jesse Lee Reno. It is not close to my maternal ancestor. It diverges from the original immigrant; two different sons. There are so many confusing names that it is hard to trace: Reno, Reneau, Renault, and variations.

On my mother's side I'm descended from one of the branches of the noble Vasconcelos family, which used to be very influential in Portugal centuries ago, particularly in the early centuries after the country became independent from León. In the Douro we still have a manor with our coat-of-arms in display above the entrance, although it's been a few generations since my recent ancestors have been separated from them. Personally I don't know who owns it at this point - probably some cousin I've never heard of.

According to traditional genealogy our line is descended form a legendary hero of the siege of Lisbon and supposedly married to a bastard daughter of the first king of Portugal (whose story was likely very exaggerated), kings of León, Asturias and Pampelona. Before that, almost certainly, Visigothic kings of Iberia..at least king Egica seems to pop up in that line. But then again, probably every single person in Iberia is his descendant and none of his genes got to me, so it's not really relevant. Still cool, I guess

Ancestry, if I remember right, gives Gen. Reno as my 4th cousin, four times removed.

I have gone through all the lines of my family tree and haven't hit anyone of note yet. I just seem to be of peasant stock at the moment.

Richard Cocke (1597 – 1665) is my 11x great grandfather through my paternal side. According to Wikipedia, "He was a prominent colonial Virginia planter and politician. He established a political and social dynasty that firmly seated itself as among the most prominent in Virginia. Among his more prominent descendants are General Robert E. Lee and U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush."

According to my understanding, through his wife, Mary Aston, my 11x great grandmother, I have super-far-back but direct ancestry that includes Welsh and early English (Plantagenet) royalty, ancestors noted as esquires, knights, "KB" (Knight's Bench?), etc. Interesting stuff!
Ethnicity via Paper Trail (Rounded): 63% German, 16% Dutch, 6% Swiss, 6% Unknown, 3% Belgian, 3% French, 3% Colonial American (Irish, English, Welsh).

    Ancestry DNA Results: 64% Germanic Europe, 22% England/Wales/Northwest Europe, 6% Norway, 3% Baltic, 3% Sweden, 2% Slavic.
