New Z251 Result

I just received my L21 Subclade results from YSEQ which revealed that I am Z251+. I've joined the YSEQ project group 11 as well as the Z215 and Subclades project on FTDNA. My surname is Maver and I have a paper trail to Renfrewshire, Scotland in the 1780s, but with a suspected link to the Morayshire area in previous generations.

I'm keen on pursuing another round of testing to discover my SNPs below Z251, but haven't decided if I'll purchase the Z251 panel from YSEQ, or go "all-in" and get the Big Y from FTDNA. In analyzing the public data in the Z251 project, I see that I'm closest to the O'Brien/Breen group (GD of 20-21 at 67 markers), the James MacKall descendants (GD of 22 at 67 markers) and the Godwin/Price cluster (GD of 22-23 at 67 markers). That's just my quick, amateur spreadsheet analysis though.

Any feedback or advice at this point would be appreciated! So far, I am the only Maver to have STR results, though a Maver (L21+ by 23andMe results) from another line has just ordered a Y-37 kit from FTDNA. I'm glad to have discovered my L21 subclade, and Z251 seems like an interesting but relatively small group (so far at least). Thank you to those of you on this forum who have already done so much work discovering this haplogroup.

Thank you, David, for the welcome. I have been a member of the L21 yahoo group for a few years; it's a very knowledgeable and helpful group, but the volume of posts is difficult to keep up with! I appreciate the forum format here and I've been reading through all the Z251+ threads here since receiving my results.

Welcome to Z251 and Anthrogenica. I will take a look at your STR markers and see if anything stands out. I would recommend that at $88, the YSEQ Z251 panel test is good bargain for helping to locate your place within the known SNPs, and their turn around will be pretty fast (especially if they already have your sample in hand). Big Y would take a few months and may or may not provide additional information if you are off on your own with a unique lineage.

[Edit: You seem to have a couple of odd-ball markers that nobody else has, including DYS459a=8 and DYS413=21,24. You almost share DYS464=14,15,15,16 with Donatella. I don't think I can predict where you would be, so would encourage you to think about taking the YSEQ Z251 panel.]

I also noticed that I have some unique markers for this group, and that made me wonder if I might also have some novel SNPs to find if I pursued the Big Y. After thinking about it though, I'd prefer to put the extra dollars towards more Y-STR testing for other Maver branches, so The YSEQ panel makes more sense for now. I'm ordering the YSEQ Z251 panel this morning and I'll post a follow-up here when I've received my results. Thanks again!

I've received some results from the YSEQ Z251 panel so far. It looks like they actually do the testing in three passes instead of two. The first results came in on Apr. 17 indicating that my sample is S11556-, and a second pass came in this morning indicating FGC13899-, and Z16943+. None of the downstream SNPs are on my alleles list, so I'll need to wait for one more pass before I find out what my terminal (so far) SNP is.

As you probably know, the possible outcomes are:

Z16943*

We'll see what happens. It's not clear to me that they are currently testing for A2201 in the Z251 panel, but I would hope so based on other recent results. I made a note of it in the Yahoo Group where Thomas Krahn usually keeps track of these things.

Seferhabahir, thank you for checking about A2201. I received an email from Astrid Krahn shortly after my last post stating that, "Z16944, L555, CTS4157 are still processing." It looks as though YSEQ will not be looking for A2201 in the Z251 panel, at least not on my order. We'll see what my results look like, but I'd be happy to order a test for A2201 if it helps establish its location on the Z251 tree. I'll post again as soon as I get my next round of results.

Let's see what the results show for Z16944, L555, CTS4157. If you are negative for all three, you should order A2201.
