    My AncestryDNA results

I have just received some results for my AncestryDNA test, some of my 23andMe matches seem to be in those results, plus these are my ethnicity results -

    38% Europe West (range 11-64%)
    27% Ireland (range 10-45%)
    26% Great Britain (range ?-57%)
    7% Scandinavia (range ?-23%)
Less than 1% Iberian Peninsula (range ?-4%)
    Less than 1% Finland/Northwest Russia (range ?-2%)

I have 52 pages of matches, including at least one person I match with on 23andMe and a distant cousin who I've known of for some years now, Ancestry correctly identifying our link.

I pleased with my results at Ancestry. I have tested with FTDNA and 23andMe (yes I am addicted to dna genealogy) and have gotten close to the same responses from the matches I have contacted at Ancestry as I have had from FTDNA (keeping in mind I have only had my results from Ancestry for two months) and more than I have received in years from my 23andMe matches. The family trees are a big help, giving me the advantage of not bothering those who don't have hopeful connections. A fair number with private or no family trees have responded to my request to supply one.

    My ancestry results seem iffy.
24 % Great Britain makes sense as one grandmother was all UK ancestry.
13 % Scandinavian ok maybe my northern German and some of the UK.
3% Europe west.....well I have a grandfather of German ancestry, German Americans that married other German Americans, a mixture of northern and southern Germans but definitely Germans.
2% Iberian not sure where that comes from.....

23andme matched me better, the French German, British/Irish , combined with northern euro fits my,mothers side. My French/German I think is at 13% on 23 and me but it has a low recall rate so the rest goes into northern euro and possibly 1.5 Scandinavian.

I am surprised you are English and your Europe west is so much higher than mine...

What are the ranges, because I have quite a large range for some of the components?

My Ancestry results appear to be more accurate than my 23andMe. My mother has also tested with Ancestry, so I have the ability to compare and contrast.
Here are my results from Ancestry:
    REGION APPROXIMATE AMOUNT
    Africa < 1%
    Trace Regions < 1%
    Europe 94%
    Europe West 34%
    Ireland 13%
    Europe East 10%
    Great Britain 10%
    Scandinavia 9%
    Iberian Peninsula 8%
    Trace Regions 10%
    Finland/Northwest Russia 5%
    Italy/Greece 5%
    West Asia 5%
    Trace Regions 5%
    Caucasus 5%

    Here is my mother's:
    REGION APPROXIMATE AMOUNT
    Africa 1%
    Trace Regions 1%
    Africa North 1%
    Europe 99%
    Europe West 50%
    Ireland 24%
    Great Britain 11%
    Iberian Peninsula 8%
    Trace Regions 6%
    Scandinavia 2%
    European Jewish < 1%
    Europe East < 1%
    Italy/Greece < 1%
    Finland/Northwest Russia < 1%

Here are my rather ambiguous results from 23andME:
    100%
    European

    Northern European
    20.2%
    British & Irish
    14.4%
    French & German
    5.3%
    Scandinavian
    31.4%
    Broadly Northern European

    Southern European
    2.1%
    Italian
    2.0%
    Balkan
    7.3%

    2.9%
    Eastern European

    14.4%

As I have posted on this forum before, my unknown paternal grandfather appears to have his ancestral roots in Poland, which Ancestry captures, but 23andMe doesn't. Also, almost every admixture calculator (Eurogenes, Dodecad, etc.) has me, but not my mother, with some minor - but notable - West Asian/Caucasus ancestry, which Ancestry has captured. By the way, my mother is likely of 50% German ancestry. So, I should be approximately 25%, but 23andMe doesn't capture this well.

5.3 Scandinavian is well higher than even the British average, so I expect some recent inheritance from Dutch, Germany, I suppose Poland might work.

My Scandinavian is at 7% and my biggest component is Europe West, does that indicate any recent continental ancestry, in your opinion?

edit - I thought he was talking about his Ancestry rather than 23andMe results, sorry.

That is what I am thinking. My mother is about 50-50 British Isles (including Irish) and German. My Ancestry.com results, when compared to my mother's, leave me with less Europe West, Ireland and Great Britain, and with more Europe East, Scandinavia and Finland/Northwest Russia. I also have more Italy/Greece and Caucasus, but that is likely accounted for by the fact that my father's mother's father (my great-grandfather) was from Italy. I have to assume that the East Europe, Scandinavia and Finland/Northwest Russia comes from my unknown paternal grandfather's ancestry.

I have a new match today who is a predicted 5th-8th cousin from the US. His ancestors are fairly recent immigrants to the US from Prussia, Sweden and Norway. Whilst he could have some British or Irish ancestry, all of his known ancestors are from those three countries. I've sent the profile manager a message and hopefully we can work out what the connection is.

They haven't replied so far, but I've been going through my matches and sending messages to people who I haven't already contacted (I still have another fifteen pages) and there's been a few others that don't seem to have any ancestral connection to Britain or Ireland. One such example is an American whose ancestors were all from Moravia as far as I can see, although there are large gaps after a few generations and it's likely there's a British or Irish guy in there somewhere.
