M478+ should mean that the individual is P297+ and M269-, right?
We have a project for M269+ P312- U106- folks, the M269/ht35 project but he is by default M269-.
We have a project for M343+ P297- folks, the R1b1 Asterisk project, but this guy is by default P297+.
He's somewhat unusual, and he's from Russia by the way.

I thought M478 was equivalent to M73. I may be completely wrong here, but it seems somewhere in the common node. The haplotype matches some others who are R-M73.Originally Posted by Mikewww

If you look at this Yfull tree they show three individuals with M478+. I assume those are all NGS tested.

That would make this new one that I just saw in the R1b project at least a fourth person. The one in the R1b project is from Russia. I see the one of the Yfull IDs is from the Ukraine.

Well there are also M73+ M478+ individuals so it is downstream of M73 and a nephew of M269 I suppose so to speak.

Okay, I'm misreading this, partially because I don't see M73 on the Yfull tree.
I see this is the old M73 project. I thought it was pretty much dead because the only project admin is Vince V and he hasn't been active for a while (that I know of). We could use a name update.
If I correct my prior conclusion, what we are seeing is that M73 must be ancestral to M478. I just checked FTDNA's haplotree, and believe it or not, that's what they have. M73 is the only known brother to M269 and M478 is downstream of M73 (in agreement with huntegatherer).
It would be pretty interesting for the M73+ M478- kit (180669) to do some NGS testing. In that project at least though it looks like only 3 people have tested for M478 (and one is M73- so not really relevant). It would be interesting for others in 180669's group to also test M478. They're the Western European group which seems to be a somewhat interesting distribution given that the rest of M73 seems to Central or even East Asian (not sure what province the Chinese individual is from). It will be interesting to see what comes of M73 as more data emerge. I guess this discussion really belongs in the M73 subforum.
