What is the frequency of your surname?

My paternal surname is of German origin, after a distant German ancestor. The maternal is Portuguese, after a distant Portuguese ancestor. The Portuguese is so specific it does not appear in the site. The German is so generic that it is found in many other countries, in several continents, and it often leads to people perceiving as some other.

This is the frequency of my German surname:

    Nigeria 71,067 1: 2,511
    India 46,971 1: 26,572
    Tanzania 45,957 1: 976
    Brazil 29,904 1: 6,783
    United States 26,920 1: 11,894
    Philippines 21,713 1: 4,604
    France 20,125 1: 3,272
    Germany 18,960 1: 4,252
    United Arab Emirates 12,412 1: 760
    Saudi Arabia 9,589 1: 3,132

The name is much more frequent in southern Germany than Northern Germany so frequency and rank in the southern regions of Germany exceeds that for Austria. The occupational name is used by Christians and Jews alike which explains the results for Israel.

    From the forebears:

My maiden name is the 2,778th most common in the world, a location surname. Most prevalent in the US, but highest density in the Falklands, which was a surprise. My mother's maiden name was anglicized from "Tjernlund". The meaning is unknown, and it's the 675,919th most common. They say only about 299 people have this surname, but I'm a little skeptical of that number unless they're only talking about Sweden; my 2x great grandfather's brother kept the original form and I know there are some in the US.

    Hmmm,

    Russia 6 1: 24,344,733 615,517

Only six people in the world, the 3,941,927th most common surname in the world. None listed in the United States. I think that I am the only male still alive in the United States that was born with my surname (legally changed to something else in 1958). Actually, the specific surname spelling on my birth certificate is not known in the forebears database. I used the most reasonable approximation to find the above statistic.

It means "little sparrow" and in my case it derives from a nickname given to my family because of their coat of arms (featuring three eagles).
