As mentioned above. A single swab is good for around 80 single SNP tests.

also does a cotton swab come with the alpha-beta test or do you have to order it seperately?

I think that is so you can have a DNA kit on hand for testing purposes even if you don't know what test you want to order yet. You might go visit your cousins in another country and not know who is willing to test or what tests to do yet but you want to be able to collect samples.

A collection kit is great if you do not yet know whose DNA you will be collecting, what tests will be ordered at the time of the order, or when you'd be able to return the kit for extraction, or even which lab will be doing the testing. The "Kit Only" product was released when Haplogroup A researchers were planning a trip to Cameroon, and they only needed a couple hundred swabs just to get things going.

They are a nice thing to buy in advance for planned or impromptu family reunions, before you know who will show up, or when said event will happen.

I have found it handy when I need to mail a kit to a cousin who has agreed to test but may change his mind or not get around to returning the kit. This is particularly true when corresponding with family members in other countries. Once the kit is returned, then I order the desired test.
