    Interpretation of Results? (Eurogenes K15)

    Hi All,

I just wanted to see if I could get some help with interpreting my Eurogenes K15 results. Based on having the North Sea component at the high 40.55%, my first instinct is that Norwegian is more likely than West German. My Y-DNA is R-Z8 (downstream from U106). My family is some form of British, but no paper trail exists. Thanks in advance!

My father is almost all West German leaning to the south and scores 32.65 North Sea. The single oracle correctly picks him as West German. He has elevated Siberian scores for a West German, so the Oracle 4 goes a little crazy trying to account for that giving a best match of Norwegian plus Portuguese plus West German plus West German. He does not have ancestors from Norway or Portugal as far as the paper trail. The Oracle 4 results for most can go off course because it is trying to find four ancestors of typical admixture that could add up mathematically to your admixture by contributing 25% of your DNA.

Just for more examples, my mom is about half British and half West German and scores 34.42 North Sea. The single Oracle scores her almost even distance to West German and Southwest English and the Oracle 2 best match is Southwest English plus West German, so very accurate. But the Oracle 4 goes off trying to account for minor admixture by picking her best match as Norwegian plus Spanish Cantabria plus West German plus West Norwegian.

I am their mix and score 34.27 North Sea. The single Oracle picks me at almost equal distance as French, West German, Southwest English, or South Dutch. These are all reasonable given my admixture. The best Oracle 4 result for me is Orcadian plus Sardinian plus West Norwegian plus West Norwegian, which is not a good representation of my ancestry even though it probably is a good way to produce my ancestry with exactly four grandparents. It is just that none of our ancestral backgrounds neatly divide into four pieces. You may be getting the same effect. Are your best single Oracle results British?

Thanks so much for your response! I'm starting to wonder if some of my ancestors were right in the 1890s. They claimed our family was German, but we have never found a German surname in the line, only Watts & Watson. My top 10 single Oracle results are:

    # Population (source) Distance
    1 Norwegian 5.64
    2 West_Norwegian 5.68
    3 North_Dutch 6.41
    4 West_German 6.56
    5 Swedish 6.66
    6 Danish 7.37
    7 Orcadian 7.5
    8 Southeast_English 8.53
    9 Southwest_English 8.62
    10 West_Scottish 8.77

Since the English & Scottish examples are above 8.5, I'm guessing that's not very significant a match. We know our family was here as early as 1770, so I'm wondering if we were Germans who changed their name so early that it wasn't recorded. Do you think these results reflect that my ancestors were right, and I'm actually German instead of British?

    Thanks!
    Matt W.

In my amateur opinion, since even your highest match is 5.64 distance, I would say that you probably have some admixture of multiple populations and it very well could include several of the populations in the list. I can use my mother as an example to illustrate. She has colonial American ancestors from three basic sources - her mom was Colonial Virginia and her Father was 3/4 colonial Pennsylvania German plus 1/8 colonial New England plus 1/8 more recent English immigrant. By using surnames or known origin and ranking in order of significance, her ancestors were English, West/South German, Scottish, Alsace German/French, North German, Swiss, and Irish. Here is her admixture with Eurogenes V2 K15:

    # Population Percent
    1 North_Sea 34.42
    2 Atlantic 24.73
    3 West_Med 14.1
    4 Baltic 11.02
    5 Eastern_Euro 7.67
    6 East_Med 3.49
    7 West_Asian 2.9
    8 South_Asian 1.23
    9 Northeast_African 0.31
    10 Amerindian 0.12

The following are her top single Oracle results:

    # Population (source) Distance
    1 West_German 4.93
    2 Southwest_English 5
    3 South_Dutch 5.55
    4 Southeast_English 6.8
    5 French 7.42
    6 North_Dutch 7.91
    7 North_German 8.5
    8 Danish 8.51
    9 Irish 8.66
    10 West_Scottish 9.01
    11 Orcadian 9.04

You can see that several of her known ancestry sources also show up in these lists, though some of them are not matches. You may have something very similar to this, just that your ancestors seem to have more "north" European admixture, but it may be mixed.
