    Middle Eastern Ancestry?

    Hello everyone,

Ever since I've delved into genetic genealogy, the question of whether I have Middle Eastern or Jewish ancestry has been bothering me. My question is, if I build my case with the evidence which I believe suggests that I have Middle Eastern or Jewish ancestry, will you kind people of Anthrogenica tell me if you agree?

First, here is my result from Eurogenes K13. I think the East Med score is a little high in proportion to the rest of the European ancestry:

Here are a sibling's. I've been looking around, and I believe his Red Sea score is slightly elevated relative to his ancestry.

Then there are the K36 results:
    Population
    Arabian 1.00%
    Armenian -
    Central_African 1.29%
    Central_Euro 1.73%
    East_African 6.13%
    East_Balkan 0.28%
    East_Central_Euro 0.56%
    East_Med -
    Eastern_Euro 2.96%
    Fennoscandian 0.54%
    French 2.47%
    Iberian 7.73%
    Near_Eastern 0.72%
    North_Atlantic 2.00%
    North_Sea 3.32%
    Pygmy 5.63%
    West_African 62.97%
    West_Caucasian 0.37%
    West_Med 0.30%

    Sibling:
    Population
    Central_African 1.49%
    Central_Euro 0.28%
    East_African 7.35%
    East_Balkan 0.32%
    East_Central_Euro 0.48%
    Eastern_Euro 3.17%
    Fennoscandian 0.56%
    French 6.03%
    Iberian 3.88%
    Near_Eastern 0.41%
    North_Atlantic 4.19%
    North_Sea 2.12%
    Pygmy 3.78%
    Volga-Ural 1.48%
    West_African 63.59%
    West_Med 0.86%

The next bit of evidence that causes me to question the possibility of Jewish ancestry, is a tiny segment which seems to match only persons of Jewish ancestry. Here is the small segment in question in comparison with three of many Ashkenazi matches. The fourth is one lone Mexican, presumably of Sephardic ancestry.

I believe it is distant, but does it appear to be likely at all?

Well the only considerable middle eastern ancestry in your composition is 6-7% East african ancestry which probably standard rate for an african american. I dont think that you have recent middle eastern ancestry. Please share your oracle results as well.

But its better for you to show us PuntDNAL k8 African only results too. I curious what will it show. (Western semitic component in PuntDNAL K8 doest mean semitic ancestry, its a wide component which represent west euroasian populations who are not african)

I am thinking from looking at your numbers and your description that you are looking at the 20% - 30% non-African ancestry and that within that the Eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea numbers maybe with a few others may suggest that there may be a Jewish ancestor. I think it is at least possible, but may be hard to detect or prove if you don't have some paper ancestry to go with it. If it helps, my wife has a Jewish (from Germany) g-g grandmother through her mother. It shows in her numbers, I think, but may not jump out at you. Relative to others with Western European ancestry she does consistently show a little higher in the Eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea numbers plus it seems she may have picked up some East Asian/Siberian through this same source. Through her father, she is supposed to have an Amerindian g-g-g-g-g grandmother (which is pretty hard to detect in these tests). I have his test, too, and there are a couple of large, admixed segments of his DNA, that add up to about he right percentage (though mostly it is pretty busted up) that makes me think it is possible. However, it looks like that ancestor really was about half Amerindian and half West African. Otherwise, she is English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, French, and German. Here are her Euro K13 numbers to see how that looks:

    Population
    North_Atlantic 45.93%
    Baltic 21.49%
    West_Med 16.17%
    West_Asian 4.15%
    East_Med 9.02%
    Red_Sea 0.93%
    South_Asian -
    East_Asian 0.26%
    Siberian 0.80%
    Amerindian -
    Oceanian 0.46%
    Northeast_African 0.67%
    Sub-Saharan 0.11%

    And at K36:

    Amerindian -
    Arabian 1.28%
    Armenian 0.20%
    Basque 0.99%
    Central_African -
    Central_Euro 5.53%
    East_African -
    East_Asian -
    East_Balkan -
    East_Central_Asian -
    East_Central_Euro 8.30%
    East_Med 0.57%
    Eastern_Euro 4.51%
    Fennoscandian 7.41%
    French 5.23%
    Iberian 16.87%
    Indo-Chinese -
    Italian 13.04%
    Malayan -
    Near_Eastern -
    North_African -
    North_Atlantic 16.67%
    North_Caucasian 2.30%
    North_Sea 14.70%
    Northeast_African -
    Oceanian -
    Omotic -
    Pygmy -
    Siberian -
    South_Asian -
    South_Central_Asian -
    South_Chinese -
    Volga-Ural -
    West_African -
    West_Caucasian -
    West_Med 2.41%

I hope that helps, a little.

You could have askhenazi in you or just european. It's hard to tell since the Ashkenazi are mixed with Europeans.I highly doubt that you have middle eastern ancestry but it could be possible.Share your oracles.

It could easily be noise from ENF on ur european side, or from basal eurasian on ur african side. But it could be an arab trader during the middle ages from either ur eurpean or african side, its very hard to determine

I'm still kind of confused about the Middle Eastern result of 3.6% on 23andMe but not sure what exactly that Middle Eastern ancestry may be or what I'm supposed to be looking for calculator wise in GEDMatch to determine or pin point the Middle Eastern heritage.

Randwulf - Yes, I'm thinking that I can see the last bit of evidence of a distant Jewish ancestor, maybe from around the 18th century, before it's completely washed away in recombination.

Which oracles do you guys want to see the most? I personally don't find them too revealing because I think they just reflect the bulk of my ancestry, which appears to be Western European and West African. A lot of them mention Spanish populations. I don't know if that is real or a way the calculator rationalizes some of the components.

I will say that there is one more occurrence that has caused me to think of Jewish ancestry. Someone would have to take a closer look at my Gedmatch number though.

Here is an African American average from the spreadsheet:

    African_American:
    ASI 0.00%
    Sub-Saharan 80.00%
    Oceanian 0.00%
    Beringian 0.00%
    ENF 5.20%
    CHG 4.00%
    Siberian 0.00%
    E_Asian 0.00%
    WHG 9.80%
    Amerindian 1.00%

Everything is nearly the same, except for the leap in ENF. It also deviates from the ratio typical for French, English, Scottish, and Irish ancestry. What do you guys think?
