    mtDNA C in the Ukraine

    My great grandmother tested as C7b. Does anyone know what that might be? I've heard everything from Chinese to Native American.

    It's been found in HGDP Naxis (of Southwest China) and also from eastern India. Native is probably out of the question. I don't know if it's been found in Roma.

    Are you the C7b in the Polish(-Lithuanian Commonwealth) Project?

    According to phylotree.org, this FTDNA mtDNA sequence is also C7b. But I see no mention of a geographic or ethnic origin.

    I have some Romanian matches on 23andme with that. There were groups of central Asians, such as Cumans that settled in the area.

    My wife is C4b, generally a Siberian lineage, but her maternal ancestors came from what is now south-east Poland. There have been various studies showing low percentages of MtDNA C in populations in that general area of Europe. The question is when did those C lines arrive in Europe- it could have been with the spread of R1a into Europe (MtDNA C4a and C5 has been found in ancient remains near the Black Sea); it could have arrived with the Uralic speakers whose descendants are now living in Estonia and Finland; or it could have arrived with the Huns, the Magyar, or the Mongols.

    My closest mtDNA C4a1 match is from Ukraine so far (I am from South India). So these migrations may have been long ago (as you say with yDNA R1a movement from the East, considering yDNA R1a Z2123+in my family also has Ukrainian matches)
    Paternal YDNA: G-P303+ -> G-Z30522+
    Paternal mtDNA: U7a3b1
    Maternal YDNA: R-Z2123+ -> R-YP526+
    Maternal mtDNA: C4a1 (T195C!)

    Another possibility. Basically, any group that touched on or traveled through both central Siberia and central Europe at some point is probably a reasonable guess. And it could have been more than one of these groups. But the end result is that there are now pockets of mtDNA C in Central Europe in people with no recent Siberian or East Asian ancestry.
