    FTDNA Y-DNA 12 Test Retired?

I wonder if FTDNA has retired the Y-DNA 12 test. I don't see it offered on FTDNA website anymore.

It can still be ordered through group projects such as this one:

Is it even of any genealogical use? Many of my 12-marker matches are from such distant places that our common ancestor probably lived well before any records were kept.

They are good when you don't want to spend a lot of money, but want to take a chance and see if someone who has your surname is a match. I found someone who shared my surname last year. I ordered the 12 marker and to my surprise he was a 12 marker match to my brother. I ordered the SNP Pack for Q-L245 and discovered he is Q-BZ68 which is off of Q-YP1003. My brother is Q-YP1003. Eventually I will order the Q-BZ68 for my brother. I also ordered a Family Finder test for him about a month ago. I'm hoping my brother and I will match him on the autosomes as well.

That's a good point. For myself, I have very few Smith matches at any level of yDNA testing.

I agree with Tįltos's point about the affordability of the 12 makers test. If FTDNA is planning to phase out the Y-DNA 12 test, they need to bring the price of next tier tests one step down, so the starter test matches the current price of Y-DNA 12 test.

A cheap starter test should be useful for surveying a population of interest for a specific haplotype. Once potential individuals are identified, more expensive and advanced tests can be used.

I'm not sure they are looking to phase it out. But they *probably* prefer people to order the more expensive tests, therefore making it like a treasure hunt to figure out how to order it.

One of my best 111-marker matches started out as an exact 12-marker match (and he does not share my surname). I watch for them, and if they look good, I contact them and try to get them to upgrade. If the match has my surname, I will offer to pay for the upgrade if I can't talk him/her into springing for it him/herself.

We use 12 marker tests for a specific variant surname family group in one of my projects.
Two family groups with a specific variant of the surname have very different 12 marker haplotypes, we can tell by 12 markers which particular family group the men are related to.
Some go on to order more markers, but as one gentlemen has been paying for the tests on men with this variant surname most stay at 12 markers.

I think FTDNA should market 12 marker tests in a bundle package, and offer them at a discount for family reunions. If I had my way I would love to take at least 50 of these 12 marker tests to my grandfather's ancestral village in southern Italy. It is a pretty isolated village and one of the first Arbėreshė settlements there.
