has anyone here got surprise amerindian results in the dna tests?

i'm curious as to how common is it for people with no known amerindian in their paper trail but yet more than 5% amerindian shows up on ancestrydna, 23andme etc.

bonus if the person was born+raised+lived somewhere in the eastern hemisphere their whole life.

Assuming you're American I think If your ancestors been living for 300 years in America then there's no way that all your ancestors came from the same region so having Native ancestry is rather typical for Colonial Americans and no Colonial White American is 100% European from based the results I've seen.

6 or so Generations back from a full blooded American Indian would give you about 1.5 % American Indian DNA today. when you start going back more than a hundred and fifty years (that's approx. 6 Generations) while you might be a true descendant, the chances of it showing up in a DNA pie chart or population group are infinitesimal.

Finding cases where a family simply stopped talking about a Native American ancestor is probably extremely rare. A more common scenario would probably be through adoption (or maybe a misplaced paternity) where the legacy was lost. But I would say that's still rare. I've got lots of ancestors from every state south of the Mason-Dixon line back to the 1600s and family stories but haven't found any paper proof and it doesn't show in my uncle's genes.

i wasn't talking about myself personally. while i did score positive for amerindian ancestry(16% prior to ancestrydna update, 18% after ancestryupdate, and 17% on genesforgood), it wasn't a surprise in my case as my mom's parents were born and raised in Mexico

My husband gets exactly 2% on both Ancestry and 23andMe but we have no idea where it comes from or which parent it comes from, as they have no known NA ancestors. However, he's mixed black and white and only scores 39% maximum African on either test, telling us that his dad's side is quite ethnically mixed. His mom got tested on 23andMe this week actually so we should know pretty soon at least which side that NA comes from.

I have 0.2% on 23andMe, I am British born. My grandma's side of the family has some roots in Argentina + a few other Latin American countries but I didn't think i'd have any Native American DNA.

I get a regular ~1% Siberian on GEDmatch calcs with my 23andme data, which is occassionally Native American. This caused one oracle to twig me as 3% Eskimo, which is the strangest oracle result I've recieved so far (even the oracles constantly putting me closer to the Dutch and even Germans than Irish/Orcadian seem sane in comparison)! I have no American ancestors nor do I believe I have any Finnish or Russian ancestry.

Conversely, my Ancestry data gives me zero Siberian across the board and only trace amounts of Native American on some calcs.
