Corded Ware cultural complexity uncovered using genomic and isotopic analysis from south-eastern Poland

Abstract: During the Final Eneolithic the Corded Ware Complex (CWC) emerges, chiefly identified by its specific burial rites. This complex spanned most of central Europe and exhibits demographic and cultural associations to the Yamnaya culture. To study the genetic structure and kin relations in CWC communities, we sequenced the genomes of 19 individuals located in the heartland of the CWC complex region, south-eastern Poland. Whole genome sequence and strontium isotope data allowed us to investigate genetic ancestry, admixture, kinship and mobility. The analysis showed a unique pattern, not detected in other parts of Poland; maternally the individuals are linked to earlier Neolithic lineages, whereas on the paternal side a Steppe ancestry is clearly visible. We identified three cases of kinship. Of these two were between individuals buried in double graves. Interestingly, we identified kinship between a local and a non-local individual thus discovering a novel, previously unknown burial custom.

A lot of good material in this old thread about the possibility of L11 in Corded Ware Poland (and Moravia):

I know the paper was only willing to call as far as L11 and there are inconstancies in the more downstream SNPs but every one they mention below L11 is also under DF13.

Of course somebody's going to burst my bubble but in the mean while I going to live in hope : ))))

All ancient samples have false positive calls below L21 in some form or another. I assume that the L11 samples have P312- calls as well.

Haven't had a chance to read the paper yet, but that's two pretty old Corded Ware that are R1b-P310? Right?

    Rumor confirmed?

Probably but until the BAM files come out I'm going to dream on : )

These SNPs are also likely far too young to turn up in these samples but hey ho.

Are they a little bit too young to tell us anything substantial about the relationship between R1b and CWC?

To the best of my knowledge, I haven't seen mtDNA I2 pop up in any Neolithic culture (paper suggests maternal lineages are Neolithic), but it has a weak distribution across central Europe and pools in UK/Ireland today. I suspect it was a CHG-like lineage mediated to the steppes from the Caucasus area at some point. The others may be Neolithic, I don't follow them that much, and I think U4b1b2 is EHG related.

I wondered about those dates. They are a little too young for Corded Ware period. Corded Ware was gone by about 2200 BC. Those dates are really too late even for Bell Beaker.
