Ancestry & GEDMatch results help

Hello,

I'm new to genealogy and I'm unsure on a few things. What I knew of the ancestry on my mothers side, my grandfather was Welsh and grandmother mostly, if not fully, English. There was apparently Jewish on her grandmothers side, but that did not show up on any results. I hardly know anything about my fathers, but I was told he was a quarter Irish and presumably the rest English.

I did an AncestryDNA kit and got:

Great Britain 58%
Ireland 25%
Iberian Peninsula 8%

Trace Regions
Europe West 4%
Finland/Northwest Russia 3%
Scandinavia 2%
Europe East < 1%

I then used GEDMatch to see if it would say anything different. I want to know if my results suggest that I'm typical for someone from the UK/England or not as I'm now quite confused as to what my ethnicity is more representative of.

On the lower left of the component percentage/pie chart result page for GEDmatch admix calculators are tabs Oracle and Oracle4. Check at the Oracle 4 populations, especially the higher Ancestor mode. The lower the number at the end of the population lines, the greater the accuracy of the fit of the population averages to your data.

Welcome! You should also try the Jtest (one of the Eurogenes ones) that was created to identify Jewish ancestry. Must have been a very slight trace however, otherwise ancestry would have maybe picked it up (e.g. I scored 1 % European jewish and I have no known jewish ancestry).

Welcome from another English person. Because the English are such an admixed population, with Continental admixture from around the North Sea strong particularly in SE England, most autosomal DNA tests for ancestry so far tend to have problems in identifying us. I only have known English ancestry, with a pretty extensive family tree - all English, mainly East Anglian, but 23andMe V4 AC in spec gave me only 32% for British & Irish.

The English also often receive rather mysterious Southern European percentages, that we can't explain yet. I get 32% Southern European on FT-DNA FF My Origins. 23andMe in AC spec claims that I receive around 1% from each of my parents! DNA.land gives me Balkan! The new Living DNA test is currently being launched, that uses the POBI British reference population, split into 21 British regions. Keep an eye on how we get on with that test. It might become the definitive atDNA test for people of mainly British ancestry - but right at the moment, it's untested, without review.

As David said, when using GEDMatch calculators such as the Eurogenes K13 aqnd K15, you should look on Oracle and Oracle 4, to see your Genetic Distances to their reference populations. The Eurogene K13 and maybe K15 seem to get us English best.
