Lots of news for the Haplogroup Q Project! Most interesting from the Haplogroup.org blog is about the Simons Genome Diversity Project (SGDP). Also thanks to Vladimir Gurianov for having them placed into Y Full.

Iranian-The YFull sample ID is ERR1025632. Its initial placement is Q-BZ310.

Chané
The Chané people are a Native South American group.
The Chané sample from the SGDP has the ID ERR1395547 at YFull. It has been initially placed on the Q-M848 branch.

Karitiana
There are two samples. ERR1395599 has been initially placed as Q-M848. ERR1025635 has been initially places as Q-M848. There is already one Karitiana sample at YFull, ID HGDP00998.


Mixtec
The Mixtec people are from the La Mixteca region in Mexico.
The Mixtec sample’s ID at YFull is ERR1347738. It has initially been assigned to Q-M848.

Pima
The Pima or Akimel O’odham people are a Native North American people who live in what is now southern Arizona.
The sample has YFull ID ERR1025603. Its initial placement on the tree is Q-Z770.

Quechua
The Quechua people are a Native South American group.
The sample at YFull has ID ERR1395589. Its initial tree placement is Q-Z5910*.

Zapotec
The Zapotecs peoples are a Native Americas group. Most live in the southern state of Oaxaca in Mexico.
There are two samples from the Zapotecs being processed. Their IDs at YFull are ERR1347686 and ERR1395622. The initial placement of both is Q-CTS2731.

Q-M242 Project News (22 Dec 2016)

The big news for the project today is that we have successfully funded three BIG Ys for the project. These include a Mahican Q-M3, a New Mexico Jewish Heritage Q-L275, and an Italian Q-L245. We are now working to fund testing of an Asian Q-M120 project member.

The Q-Y2200 Tree & the Q-L245 SNP Pack

They talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees. For Q-Y2200, this is not our problem. We have found many of the Jewish Q trees in the forest, and we know that Q-Y2200 is one tree. The problem is that we cannot puzzle out the trees and their branches by looking at the leaves.

Q-BZ2034 Branches – Mahican & Cherokee!

Over the next few weeks, I will talk about the discoveries the project has made from the over twenty BIG Ys ordered during the 2016 Holiday sale. One of the tests sponsored by the project was a Mahican lineage, Van Gilder. The results from this test have uncovered a connection between two other BIG Y tested families.
Together, the Van Gilder, Helton, and Woodall families belong to a new Native Americas branch, Q-BZ2034. The Heltons and Woodalls both have traditions of being Cherokee. The Van Gilders are by tradition Mahican.

Q-M3 is the most common paternal lineage among native men in both North and South America. Through project research, we have discovered that there are two main surviving branches of Q-M3, Q-M848 and Q-Y4308. So far, it is Q-Y4308 that connects to the Eastern Algonquian peoples.

However, the new Q-BZ2034 branch is not under Q-Y4308 but instead is under Q-M848.

Thus, the connection between the three families is interesting, because the Mahicans are Eastern Algonquian, but the Cherokee are Iroquoian.

The table below shows the relationship between the three families. Note that the connections may be over a thousand years old. The project does not have date ranges yet. Date ranges are one of the reasons for YFull secondary analysis which is pending.

There are several known events that could explain the movement between groups.

First, the Mahicans were pushed into Iroquoian lands by European settlement. Second, the Cherokee absorbed many fragmented groups. Then deeper in time, in the matrilineal cultures of the region, male children may have passed back and forth between peoples with their cultural identity set by the mother's heritage.

Overall, I think we are moving closer to knowing regions of origin and not a single Q-M3 Native origin for the Native Peoples of North and South America.

DNA testing in a citizen science project like the Q-M242 Haplogroup project must be both progressive and pragmatic. Testing is progressive when it uses new technologies like BIG Y and advanced SNP packs to discover and explore new branches. It is pragmatic when it recognizes that all cannot afford the price of such tests and finds other options.

The Q-M242 project now has over 200 complete and pending BIG Ys. We have over a 100 results from the Q-L245 SNP Pack. When we began to plan additional SNP Packs though, we realized there was a problem. In a project of over 1,300 tested Y-DNA Qs, almost half were only tested or predicted to be the earliest branch Q-M242. They were not ready to order an advanced SNP Pack. Further, we realized that the expected cost of $119 for a SNP Pack would be too much for many.

Thus, we put together the Q-M242 Backbone SNP Pack and negotiated its price with Family Tree DNA. The price will be $39 US.

Some highlights; check out the link for more details!

Q-Backbone Test – Update 1
Results for the first 90 Q-Backbone SNP Pack tests are back. Of these, 78 are in the Q-M242 project. They are exciting, and we have updated many of the clusters in the project based on them.

Q-Y2200
This branch is what we know as Ashkenazi Jewish Q. Two test takers have results in this group.

Q-L275
This is the major tree branch, Q3 or Q3-L275. Its geography covers most of Eurasia though its focus and greatest diversity appears to be the Middle East.

Q-M120
This is one of the two major branches under Q2. It is primarily East Asian. One person came back as this branch. They mark our first Mongolian Q-M120 in the project.

Q-M902
Many people came back as members of the Q-M902 branch under Q-M3. Q-M902 is proving to be the major Q branch beginning in the United States and flowing down to the tip of South America.

One of the important findings here is that some who were predicted only as Q-M242 came back as members of this lineage. If you suspect that you are from a native lineage but are predicted or even tested simply as Q-M242, please email me to look at your results.

Q-Z780
Q-Z780 is one of the great citizen science discoveries. An uncle branch to Q-M3, it is the second most common paternal lineage in the Americas. It is wonderful to see so many new people confirmed into this branch.

Q-L54
Q-L54 is one of the upper levels of the Q1 lineage. All three people who came back on this branch may actually be members of the Q-L330 lineage under it. Alternatively, they may be part of a split between the two branches.

Note below that two of them were predicted to be Q-M3. Although FTDNA's prediction program is highly reliable, it is not a replacement for actual Y-SNP testing.

Q-L53
Several people came back as Q-L53. They may be members of the emerging Q-YP4004 branch. Extensive testing is needed to explore the geography of this branch.

Q-L527
Q-L527 is one of the two most common Northwestern European branches.

Q-Y4800
Finally, a nice group were confirmed to be Q-Y4800. As they are not Q-F1161, they may be Q-SK1932. Much more testing is needed to explore this lineage.

We participated in this and found out that my wife's cousin, who carries her maternal grandfather's Y-DNA is Q-M902. Can't wait to find out more! What exactly does R. Canada mean when she says "beginning in the United States and flowing down to the tip of South America"? Does she imply that Q-M902 folks are only found in the United States and parts south but not in Canada? What are the implications of this?

I suppose it means they haven't found people in Canada to be Q-M902. Only in the US and various places South. In other words it is a Native American branch of Q. However it doesn't mean it started in the US, it could be that the descendants of Q-M902 just happen to no longer be near Canada and Alaska areas. Either that or that they simply haven't tested from those areas.
