    Guess My Nationality

    Hi Guys,

I wanted to see if I have the "look" of a specific European country. I've been told Irish, or an Irish-French hybrid.

Could be pretty much anywhere European if not Western Eurasian to be perfectly honest. You'd certainly fit here in England. Most likely equally in France, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, etc. It's a myth that we Europeans all fit into neat phenotypes determined by present day borders of nation-states. On one forum I was told that us English all have black beards. Truth is, this. I've lived in an English town with a high migration rate from Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Latvia, Czech republic, Portugal, etc. Sometimes you can correctly guess the origin of someone there. However, often it's those non hereditary features - dress, hair style, tattoos (or the absence), social behaviour, posture, even lifestyle. You might even be unconscious of this. As for hereditary features alone. Yes, you can sometimes get it right. Particularly in different zones, such as Baltic to Iberia. But even at that range, there are exceptions. Try to focus in closer - well sometimes yes, I can spot a Polish face, and a Lithuanian face, even a Portuguese face. But with even more exceptions, so many exceptions, that you realise the invalidity of trying to apply these traits to admixed people in the Americas etc.

The English for example, like many European populations, have had a lot of admixture that we know about within the historical period over the past 1,600 years. We can assume that this admixture reaches back much further into prehistory. People didn't invent boats that recently. Not only that, but genetics are just starting to reveal that many of us descend from the same, populations during prehistory. Have we had the isolation ever since, for such a level of genetic drift, to make us so distinguished? No. If I walk into an English pub, I'll see all sorts of hereditary traits. Broad faces, long faces, brown hair, red hair, wavy hair, straight hair, brown eyes, blue eyes.

England is a fairly old country, but most European countries are not - and their borders have fluctuated incredibly - with ethnicity and language mixed all over the place. European borders have even been radically altered in my lifetime. Where did the GDR, Yugoslavia, or Czechoslovakia go? Go back further - where did Prussia, or the Austro-Hungarian Empire go? What about the Holy Roman Empire?

Ethnicity is not biology. Ethnicity is a construct. Identities change and fluctuate, even adapt. They are not genes, not traits. Humans invent their own cultures. Unfortunately they then often proceed to enforce them with religious or nationalistic boundaries, and then to slaughter each other over these constructed imaginary divisions.

That's my opinion when I see these "what European Country do I look like?" questions on the Internet.

Yes I agree Norfolk. I'm supposed to be descended from an Anglo Saxon but I look nothing like an Anglo Saxon.

Only a joke, my relatives look completely different, it's just a genetic lottery.

I am curious what an Anglo Saxon looks like. Not today's Anglo Saxon, but one from a thousand years ago.

They probably looked similar to modern Scandinavians (Danes, Norwegians, Swedes), North Dutch and Northwestern Germans.

I suppose we tend to think in stereo types, it's partly what we were taught in school and what we see in the media. This is for primary school children:-

I would guess the reality was different, but some probably did fit the stereotype. This is one facial reconstruction, but I would think is partly guesswork :-

If you're looking for some sort of "classification", you simply won't find it here. This is the wrong forum for such discussions.

    Thanks John,

Very Interesting. I learned a few things from the school kid primer.

The images of Anglo Saxon's are consistent with what I pictured. I think facial reconstructions are getting better as time goes on.
