    Family Finder results

After quite a drought, I just got a bunch of new matches last night.

Two interesting ones -- one who was adopted by a known first cousin twice removed (and so who may be related to them and to me); and one with Iranian ancestry, who also matches my cousin who shares with me my Syrian Sephardi line.

I just got my results and one of my closest matches is Q1b1a via my mother's side, but part of the German/Dutch(?) lineage, rather than the Ashkenazi cluster. Hrmmm. It seems to be linked to a single surname, but it seems there are some adoptions, or I suppose the possibility of NPE is there.

Some more new matches over the last days, including a previously unknown Gillespie cousin who was able to fill me in on a Seattle branch of the family that diverged from the Minnesota branch.

    Hi AJL
What length a match should be if it is to be considered as a real match . By real match i mean related at least in past five generations.

I have been told by the owner of Gedmatch that 10cM with 1000 SNP is a real match. From the Gedmatch help page:

"Autosomal matches - The GEDmatch 'One-to-Many' utility shows how well you match other people in our DNA database. The closest matches are at the top of the list. Since GEDmatch accepts data from multiple sources, you may see matches who were not shown in the results at your testing company. GEDmatch also shows results with matching segments that do not meet the statistical thresholds used at the testing companies. Results that do not meet a 7 cM 'largest segment' threshold are marked with a pink background. It is left up to the user to be aware that these 'matches' probably do not meet the requirements of a valid genealogical match. Also be aware that a matching segment should also be at least 700 SNPs. Some researchers believe that even larger thresholds should be used (10 cM and 1000 SNPs) before considering a 'match' to be valid in the genealogical timeframe. "
