I just got my results back from 23 and me and found out that my mtDNA haplogroup is W6! This seems to be quite a rare haplogroup. My maternal line seems to point back to Durham, England. I wonder how W6 got there?

So there is a Visigothic sample from Spain with W6a haplogroup, but I wonder if it is W6a1a or not?:

    https://reich.hms.harvard.edu/sites/...Transect_0.pdf

If I'm not mistaken, this Visigothic W6a is actually the only known so far ancient W6a younger than Bronze Age.

Bronze Age W6a samples are Corded Ware Lithuania (Mittnik et. al. 2017) and from Corded Ware East Germany:

    - W6a sample dated to ~3260-2630 BC, Baltic Corded Ware, Plinkaigalis, Lithuania
    - W6a sample dated to ~2566-2477 BC, Corded Ware, Esperstedt, East Germany

Here is what I got for this sample (I12034), can something downstream of W6a be identified as well?:

    =====

As for my haplogroup, I'm W6a according to mtDNA Wiki (but I haven't done mtDNA Full Sequence yet, so I'm not on YFull with my mtDNA).

    From my mtDNA Wiki report:

YFull tree for W6a haplogroup (neither me nor this Spanish Visigoth are included there so far, but I hope that they will add the Visigoth soon):

There is also a much later Moorish W6a sample I7425 in the Iberian peninsula paper [Olalde et al 2019]. Have you tried to extract the mtDNA mutations of that sample to see if it is belonging to the same subbranch as the Visigothic sample ?

There are no known current day samples with the additional mutations of the Visigothic sample as far as I know.

This study on the viking world also contains a W6a viking warrior found in Salme, Estonia : https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/703405v1

My mtDNA (M) is also W6 (Gujarati Leva Patidar Patel). The mitochondrial (mtDNA) haplogroup W is found among people of the northwestern Indian states of Gujarat, Punjab, and Kashmir more often than among people anywhere else in India.

    Indo-European migrations
Mitonchondrial DNA samples from the Yamna culture, the presumed homeland of Proto-Indo-European speakers, yielded one W3a1a, one W6c (Haak 2015)) and another W6 (Wilde 2014)), all from the Middle Volga region - an indubitable evidence that haplogroup W was indeed found among the original Proto-Indo-Europeans.
In India, haplogroup W is considerably more common among the upper castes and among Indo-European speakers according to Metspalu et al. (2004).
W6: found in most of Europe, the Near East, the Caucasus, Iran, Pakistan (Sindhi, Pathan), Central Asia and India / found in Bronze Age Russia (Fatyanovo culture)
W6a: found in Russia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia / found in Bronze Age Poland
W6b: found in Britain, Germany, Turkey, Israel and Iran
W6c: found in Greece, Turkey, Iran and Russia
