Lightbulb Please consider making the ignore function a two-way street

Currently, when one chooses to "ignore" another forum member, he can no longer see that member's posts, but the ignored member can still see his, respond to them, and even quote them. This enables the ignored member free rein to mount arguments and post insults that go unanswered unless the victim un-ignores the offender and re-engages.

Please consider making the ignore function a two-way street, i.e., when one chooses to ignore a member, that ignored party can no longer see the posts of the person who has elected to ignore him. That way two members who simply cannot get along can completely avoid one another, and neither is subject to harassment by the other.

As it is, ignore works badly for the party who wishes to avoid conflict and is a dream for obsessive, caustic, offensive, and abrasive personalities.

I guess you would have to eliminate the ability to see quotes from the ignored party to shut it down completely.

Live and learn. I didn't even know there was an ignore option. Fortunately, I haven't needed it and hopefully, I never will. Nevertheless, the only logical way to do it is to block "everything" that comes in from the ignored.

    Anyway, good luck.

That would be the weak point. I'm not sure how to avoid it, but nothing is perfect. It would take a special kind of knucklehead (but there are some out there) to reply to a post he can see only as a quote in the post of a third party.

Especially so since the quote in question would be removed when clicking on 'Reply With Quote' so would have to be manually re-entered. If somebody were to go to that sort of length it would start to look a bit like stalking ?

I forgot that Anthrogenica only gives the last quote, unlike some forums which give the whole nested mess.

sounds like a fair point to me...in this day and age, there always seems to be a certain percentage of people that either purposely troll others, or just by nature of their personality, end up being quite trollish

this forum, due to the vigilance of the mods and admins, has much less of a problem than other places, but we do have our issues on occasion

my thinking is, if the situation is bad enough that someone feels they have to put the other on ignore, then it really should be a 'full' ignore, if for no other reason, to reduce the amount of personal conflict and drama between posters

any other option will inevitably lead to some of the problems rms is talking about
...doing all you can to stay out of or avoid a conflict, yet getting dragged into it eventually, cause someone out there is pouncing on your posts, trying to push buttons or just cant let something go and move on

vBulletin is unfortunately restrictive in this regard - I have looked into the possibilities and they aren't very expansive.

A bi-directional ignoring function won't resolve the issue between two users and would, in scenarios other than the one that may be considered in this instance, prevent the other party from having the opportunity to seek reconciliation.

I'm personally not fond of the "Ignore Users" function being used given its' band-aid status in conflict resolution. In the scenario that's likely in play here, enough has already happened to warrant administrative intervention.

Nonetheless, the thought is appreciated and I'll raise this with the team to consider improving the current setup. A PM will be sent shortly regarding the precipitating matter.

Please do not adopt a two-way ignore function. I've seen how this works in facebook and it is extremely disruptive when some people can only see half of a conversation. The best way to address the problem here is simply do not engage with the person.

I was not supportive of the decision a few years ago to hide or eliminate some sub-forums. No one is ever required to read or respond to a particular forum or post. The move toward hiding sub-forums and adding more "ignore" functions strikes me as plea to 'protect me from myself', in other words, make anything that offends me invisible otherwise I will not be able to stop myself from engaging. We can already ignore people who we don't like without taking the additional step of making them invisible.
