    Any ideas on this?

One of my largest matches at 23andMe is with a unknown male with mtdna of J1c3 and ydna of G2a. The match is 33cM over 2 segments. I sent a request to share information with this match, but, unfortunately have yet to receive a reply. Anybody care to speculate on possible ancestry or ethnicity for this person?

Perhaps if you had your Y or mtDNA result posted, or even your own thought of your own ancestry, you might get some responses to your true query.

yDNA G2a could be from nearly anywhere in West Eurasia -- I am not as familiar with mtDNA J1c3 but J1c seems broadly European perhaps with a focus more toward the centre and east of the continent.

My wife's mtDNA is J1c3c. Her great grandmother immigrated with her family from Bavaria to the U.S. in about 1869, when she was three years old. That would seem to fit "centre of the continent" pretty well, I should think.

I know next-to-nothing about G2a, although I did read that it was found in a tomb in Bavaria, in remains dated to the 7th century.
Besides British-German-Catalan, ancestry includes smaller amounts of French, Irish, Swiss, Choctaw & possibly Catawba. Avatar picture is: my father, his father, & his father's father; baby is my eldest brother.

33cM sounds rather large to me. They presumably, therefore, share at least one of the shared backgrounds as yourself.

Among others, I do have central European ancestry, such as German and Polish. I also have Armenian ancestry from Anatolia. From what I have been able to research, this person could be west Eurasian. Yet, he could also be central or eastern European. I did see that G2a is present in Bavaria. I didn't know that J1c3 was also present there. Very interesting.

That was my thought as well. Our match is through a recent ancestor. It is always a disappointment when matches don't respond to an invite to share information. Things would be so much easier! Thanks for everybody's contributions. Any other thoughts are welcome.
