Some good news, my uncle and I worked together to reach out to my late grand-aunt's husband who is still around, he is in his 80s and has been self-isolating due to Covid-19. Apparently he has two daughters which means an additional known descendant of Syed Mohammad Sami. I was worried about his wellbeing due to the current pandemic as he was the only link I could pursue.

I was able to finally track down the identity of my English 4th cousin, it turns out that she lives in Cambridge,Massachusetts and is an award winning horse rider. I can reveal more details if you PM me.

Interestingly my khalujan is also from Azamgarh district just like her ancestor and he too used to ride horses and go hunting. I went horseriding with him and the family in Naini Tal in Uttarakhand 12 years ago as he wanted us to experience it, funny coincidence.

Now I need to see how to reach out to my cousin. It is so strange to have a cousin with whom I probably share little DNA but has two common ancestors (our great great great grandparents), she looks nothing like me either lol.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, this is a chance to complete this family story which has been ongoing since we lost contact in 1919.

Also it appears that Syed Mohammad Sami Ahmad was from a very affluent family and a decorated elephant went to receive him and his wife, Elvina on their arrival back to India.

I am attaching the certificates my great great grandfather (who I shared a photo of here) received from Maulana Shibli Nomani upon his graduation from Aligarh University in 1896. One in Urdu and one in Arabic. It's a small world!

This is what I know about my direct paternal line so far, it only goes back to the 1840s or so which means the last few decades of East India Company company in India, their capital was in Calcutta which isn't far from my father's village, Ghorada in Howrah district. My late dadi was from Amta, Howrah district:

Sheikh Kudrat-e-Khuda (a common Bengali name?)
Sheikh Subedar Ali (Subedar is a military title I thought?)
    Sheikh Ashiruddin Ali
Haji Sheikh Yaar Ali (He went on Hajj to Mecca and Medina)
    Father
    Myself

We've had a sports shop in Calcutta's New Market since the 19th Century/early 20th Century as far I can remember. Haji Sheikh Yaar Ali was Anglicised and used to travel around India from Digboi in Assam to places such as Lucknow for business. His father Sheikh Ashiruddin was a craftsman who made furniture. I remember sitting on a chair which he made in my dad's ancestral village.

My new updated Ancestry results came out, it claims that I have a 4th cousin in Canada:

    Ethnicity Estimate

    Southern & Eastern India
    73%

    Northern & Western India
    27%

    Additional Communities

Indian Diaspora in the Caribbean & Fiji
From your regions: Northern & Western India; Southern & Eastern India
Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island Settlers
Victoria & Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Settlers
    Punjab and Western India
From your regions: Northern & Western India; Southern & Eastern India

I am not sure what to make of this claim?. It says 25 centimorgans shared across 3 DNA segments for this 4th cousin.

    Unfortunately not

I was looking through my family tree on MyHeritage, there are more than 7000 individuals!

I discovered that my great great great great grandmother, Kulsoom [Syeda?] Bibi was from Patar in Pargana Sagri, Azamgarh. It is reasonable to assume that she had some connection to one of the Syed families mentioned in the district gazetteer:

There are some well known Saiyid settlements in the district. The bulk of those whose sub-caste was specified at the census were Hussainis. The Saiyids of Deogaon are the descendants of one Muhammad Baghdadi, and have long been settled in the village, of which, according to the words of an old sanad they were the zamindars and muqaddams. All of them are Shias by sect, having, like other families in their part of the province, abandoned the Sunni doctrines in the time of Nawab Asaf-ud-daula. Those of Sarai Mir in pargana Nizamabad are descended from the saint Ali Ashikan who died in 1548 A.D. ; and there are other families at Patar, Jianpur and Khatibpur in Pargana Sagri and at Baragaon in pargana Ghosi. The Saiyids of Muhaminadabad belong to the family of Saiyid Hamid-ud-din and have been settled at Miiliammadabad for many generations.
Her daughter Fatah-un-Nisa married Syed Fasih-us-Zaman, it makes sense that she would have married another Syed.

Their children were Syed Mohammad Sami Ahmad, my great great grandmother Hamid-un-Nisa Syeda Bibi, Aziz-un-nisa Syeda Bibi and Wasi-un-Nisa Syeda Bibi.
