I don't know for sure you won't get ethnicity, that's just what people are saying. LivingDNA itself doesn't seem to comment on it. Some people are saying there will be an option to pay a small fee for the ethnicity, but I really have no idea where the info is coming from so who knows.

I uploaded all my kits there since it's free so there's really no harm, even if it winds up being a disappointment. I then got the LivingDNA test for Christmas - but one of the kits I uploaded was my grandfather's and since he's now deceased, an upload is the only option.

I'd say that it's pretty much spot on in regards to my English ancestry, heavily Eastern English from York to Kent as the ancestry goes.

My mother's LivingDNA results came back in under 5 weeks. This is our family's last test and we'll wait patiently for correct allocation of our Irish ancestry, which as expected is currently being allocated to the outlying regions of Britain (outlying from a Southeast England perspective). ~40% of my ancestors left Ireland for South Wales throughout the 19th century and we only know exactly where in Ireland a handful lived. Hence the DNA tests.

LivingDNA has proven to me that when they have enough references (ie. several thousands) they can correctly allocate English and Welsh ancestry. Until they have such detailed references for the rest of the world (!) I think there will always be the potential for incorrect allocation of ancestry. It's a big task and I imagine very costly but hopefully over time everyone else in the world will have the same product available as English and Welsh people currently do.

Last thought - if you've researched your family ancestry in detail don't let a DNA test make you doubt your own research! DNA tests are a work in progress and we're not there yet. Thanks to everyone at Anthrogenica who helped me understand this!

I think I'm finished with DNA research for now so best wishes to all at Anthrogenica. I'll be back when the Irish update is out.

Also, the Tuscany, Iberian, and France. Living DNA gives me those too (in addition to the high East Balkans, which is OK); I have given up trying to figure them out. They are quirks of whatever reference pops. and algorithm LivingDNA uses, I guess. I wish LivingDNA were more transparent about how they do things.

23andMe is better overall. But LivingDNA was more precise about the Eastern European ancestry, so I'd still give it a go.

This will be my first time testing, based on genealogical research (and physical traits) I am expecting a significant amount of German and Scottish/Northern Irish. There is the proverbial American oral tradition in my family of little bit of Native American, my grandmother looked like she could have been a 1/4 at most and her mother also has the looks, I just want to know one way or the other, and if not, where her olive complexion and dark hair may have come from if not Native American.

It looks like Living DNA or 23andMe would be good for my European genes, what would be recommended as A) my best choice overall were I to do just one and b)the best choice for Native American groups?

    Any advice appreciated.
